Our Natural Raw Dog Food

How we came about

Poppy_the_dog

It was a long journey to find the best natural diet for Poppy, my wonderful miniature schnauzer. She is a mum of six and one of the most important parts of my life. It took ages to research and find the right food she deserved – healthy, nutritious and made from 100% natural ingredients that weren’t going to upset her stomach, damage her teeth or cause other problems to her skin or coat. In the end I decided to make my own.

I’m passionate about dog health, and having created food that Poppy and her friends love, we want to share it with more four-legged friends.

Why Raw? For better canine health

Commercial, highly processed dog food has only been with us since the 1950’s, and there has been a resultant explosion in the number of illnesses affecting dogs due to these high-carb, low animal protein foods full of fillers, sugars and ‘meat’ derivatives (a generic term for animal proteins which avoids having to specify where the meat comes from).

Mass produced dog foods may seem quick and convenient to feed but they come nowhere near to providing the nutritional content of a dog’s natural diet. Simply put dogs are not genetically engineered to consume the high carbohydrate contents in these foods (in some cases up to 74% of the product, with just 18% protein).

Owners are finding themselves making regular trips to their vets regarding one or another common problems (whether skin or coat, obesity, digestive or behavioural) that can usually be linked to a dog’s diet.

Feeding a Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) diet is the way forward when it comes to providing your dog with all the healthy vitamins, minerals and natural oils they need to keep them healthy.  It can also help them lose excess body fat and improve muscle tone.

Free from artificial colours, preservatives and flavourings, Poppy’s Picnic does not contain any cereals, grains or fillers – major causes of allergies.  Our food does contains enzymes (such as green tripe) that help ensure proper digestion and aid the absorption of nutrients to keep your dog in top condition.

Don’t forget all the benefits of feeding Poppy’s Picnic:

  1. Improved digestion
  2. Better weight management
  3. Healthier skin and coat
  4. Reduced allergy symptoms
  5. Better teeth and gums
  6. Calmer, happier dog
  7. Firmer, smaller and less odorous stools
  8. Less gas

Proper nutrition, the way nature intended, means healthier dogs. It’s simple, and obvious, when you think about it.

How to feed raw

We all want our dogs to live a long life.  By providing them with the best natural food, Poppy’s Picnic, you will be doing the best you can to ensure this.

Changing your dog’s diet to raw food is easy. It just takes a couple of tweaks to your daily schedule to give your dog a naturally balanced diet that will help make them healthier and happier. Here’s some helpful advice to make the switch.

As with all diets, the amount your dog needs depends on several factors including breed, age and activity levels. You are the best person to determine how much food your dog needs according to these criteria and the advice we give here should always be judged against these.

Puppies

For puppies we suggest a diet that is 5% – 8% of their body weight, fed over three of four meals a day. Regularly check puppy’s weight as they will grow fast – don’t allow them to get too fat or too thin – adjusting the amount they are fed for a steady growth.

Adults

Adult dogs need  2% – 3% of their total body weight.  This might seem low if you are used to feeding them highly processed commercial foods, but remember a RAW food diet contributes to their health and wellbeing with hardly any waste.

As a responsible owner you are already watching your dog’s weight and understand that if they are becoming a little heavy you need to feed them less, or if they are looking too lean a bit more.

There are a number of ways to make the switch to better nutrition and you need consider a couple of points before choosing the best way for your dog:

Complete Change

The simplest (and one we did with Poppy) was a complete change of diet twice a day. Yesterday processed, today healthy. It can be as simple as that if your dog is healthy and doesn’t suffer from any digestive problems.

Slow Change

If your dog does have some digestive issues or is older and has been fed processed food all their lives, it maybe better to instigate a gradual change (over a couple of days) such as:

  • Mixing in Poppy’s Picnic with their old food, increasing the proportion over a few meals
  • Alternating meals, old and Poppy’s Picnic and gradually removing the old, unhealthy diet

As each dog has a different metabolic rate the amounts we suggest for feeding are to be used as a guide only
