Can you cook raw dog food?

Can you cook raw dog food? The answer is… it depends on if it contains bone or not

If your raw dog food contains bone then it must not be cooked as cooked bone can splinter and be dangerous. If your raw dog food does not contain bone, then it can usually be cooked.

Cooking raw food for dogs

Our MIGHTY MINCE and POWER BALLS no-bone raw dog food recipes can be served raw or cooked. You may choose to feed the meals cooked every day, but they are also ideal for switching fussy dogs to raw, or for poorly dogs who temporarily need a cooked diet.

In these two cookable raw dog food ranges, the bone has been replaced with powdered eggshells, a natural source of calcium, to ensure they're fully balanced and complete according to the highest FEDIAF nutritional guidelines. Currently available in four varieties: free range Chicken (which is the naturally low fat option), grass fed Beef, grass fed Lamb and Wild Boar.

“I absolutely love Poppy’s Picnic. The dog food is adored by both of my pups. Making it cookable is such a good idea as I struggle a bit with the raw stuff. The customer service is excellent.  I can’t praise this company enough”  - Amanda

How do you heat up raw dog food?

Many of our customers choose to cook their dogs’ food and are loving it! There are a few different ways to cook MIGHTY MINCE and POWER BALLS:

  1. COOK IN THE OVEN. To cook from frozen. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4 (fan assisted). Remove the mince or meatballs from the tray and place on an oven-proof dish.  Cook for 35 minutes. If you have already defrosted the mince, cook for 20 minutes. Allow to cool before serving.
  2. FRY IN A PAN. To stop the food sticking to the pan, use water instead of oil. On slow to medium heat, cook for 5 minutes until browned. Allow to cool before serving
  3. COOK IN A MICROWAVE. Remove the mince or meatballs from the tray and place on an microwave-proof dish.  Cook for 2 minutes, stir and cook for a further 2 minutes. Allow to cool before serving.

All Poppy's Picnic raw dog food recipes are complete and balanced to FEDIAF guidelines. We use fresh, high quality ingredients - that are just like the food you and I eat - which can be stored defrosted in the bottom of your fridge for 4 days. Once fully defrosted at home or cooked the food should not be re-frozen.
