FAQ: I sometimes see dark spots on my food... what are they?

Our food is made in a very simple way and we don’t do anything extra to it than necessary.

As part of this, we don’t pump our packs with gas just to prevent natural discolouration from happening (the meat you buy in the supermarket has been packed with this gas so it stays pink - if you don’t add gas the surface can go grey).

Discolouring is the result of natural oxidisation which happens sometimes when food is exposed to the air. Sometimes there are areas on the surface which look darker, because the wheatgrass and other herbs have blackened. This is purely cosmetic and there is nothing to stop you feeding these packs.

Also some of our ingredients are dark and show up as spots in the meat.

Spirulina, a blue-green algae, is one of these. This is happens during freezing as water in the spirulina's cells crystallise and puncture the cell walls. When defrosted, the phycocyanin leaks out, which can make the spirulina appear black or dark blue.

Spirulina contains anti-oxidants and may have health benefits to support body functions such as immune support, cholesterol management: blood pressure: blood sugar, allergies, skin health

As with the discolouisation, you can rest assured the food is perfectly safe to eat.
