What is Organic Kelp Seaweed?

Kelp is a type of large, brown algae found in shallow oceans. It grows in nutrient-dense waters and has been used for centuries in human and animal nutrition.

In dried, organic form, kelp is a rich source of natural iodine, essential minerals, and trace elements — all highly bioavailable for dogs.

What Does It Do for Dogs?

  • Thyroid support: The iodine in kelp supports healthy thyroid hormone production, vital for metabolism and energy regulation.
  • Skin & coat health: Its natural minerals, including zinc and selenium, help keep skin calm and coats glossy.
  • Dental care: Kelp contains compounds that may reduce plaque build-up and support oral hygiene.
  • Antioxidant protection: Rich in polyphenols and fucoidan, which support the immune system and reduce inflammation.
  • Digestive support: Its fibre content helps gut health and can support healthy stools.

Expert Opinions & Research

Veterinary nutritionist Dr Marge Chandler (Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies) explains: “Kelp is one of the few plant-based sources of highly bioavailable iodine, and is especially useful in homemade or raw diets that may lack it.”

A 2017 study in the Journal of Applied Phycology found that dogs supplemented with kelp extract showed improved coat quality and lower inflammation markers over 8 weeks.

According to the European Pet Food Industry (FEDIAF), iodine is an essential trace mineral required in all complete dog foods, which is why kelp is such a natural inclusion.
